What is intrusion detection?

To ensure your network to be secure, you need both firewalls and intrusion detection & prevention systems (IDP), in the same way as an airport needs both security guards and metal detectors. A firewall manages traffic based on strict rules, but does not control what the traffic flow contains. An intrusion detection & prevention system checks each packet of traffic to identify malicious or unwanted content. IDP is a necessary complement to a firewall and an antivirus solution.

Firewall or antivirus is not enough

• Worms will not be stopped by a firewall because they are perceived as legitimate traffic. An IDP system detects this and stops them before any damage is done.
• Enables additional monitoring of critical parts of a network, such as where personal or other sensitive information is handled.
• Provides information about who is attacking your network and how, so that other security can be tuned to create a secure IT environment.
• Earlier solutions has been difficult to administer, poor performance and very costly to maintain.
• An IDP solution creates a second layer of security on the network.
